Dubai Visa Photo Requirements 2026: Size & Rules

Choosing the right Dubai visa photo size is one of the most confusing parts of a UAE visa application. Some websites say 35 x 45 mm, others say 43 x 55 mm, and photo tools quote pixel sizes that never match. This guide explains what the UAE immigration authority actually publishes, what typing centres and agents use in practice, and how to prepare a photo that will not hold up your visa.
Quick answer: The UAE's Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs & Port Security (ICP) publishes a photo width of 35 to 40 mm (3.5 to 4 cm), a plain white or light background, and a face that fills about 70% to 80% of the photo. In practice, most typing centres, agents and photo tools produce 43 x 55 mm (4.3 x 5.5 cm) prints. The two sizes have almost the same portrait proportions, so a well-framed photo works for both. Your photo should also be recent (generally within 6 months), sharp, in colour, and show your face clearly.
Dubai Visa Photo Size in MM and CM
Requirement | What to follow |
|---|---|
Width (ICP guidance) | 35 to 40 mm (3.5 to 4.0 cm) |
Common print size | 43 x 55 mm (4.3 x 5.5 cm), widely used by typing centres, agents and photo tools |
Framing | Head and top of the shoulders visible |
Face size | About 70% to 80% of the photo |
Background | Plain white (ICP describes it as plain and light-coloured; white is the safest choice) |
Photo age | Generally no more than 6 months old |
Colour | Colour photo with natural skin tones |
Expression | Neutral, looking straight at the camera, both eyes open and visible |
Quality | Sharp, evenly lit, no filters or heavy retouching |
35 x 45 mm or 43 x 55 mm: Which One Should You Use?
Almost every visa agent and photo app quotes 43 x 55 mm as the UAE visa size. However, the width ICP publishes is 35 to 40 mm, and we could not find an official page that states 43 x 55 mm as a rule. It is best understood as the working convention in the UAE, not a government regulation.
The good news is that the two formats barely differ in shape. A 35 x 45 mm photo and a 43 x 55 mm photo are both roughly a 7:9 portrait, so what matters most is the framing: face filling about 70% to 80% of the picture, head centered, plain white background.
If your visa provider, typing centre or application form asks for a specific size, give them exactly that.
If no size is specified, a properly framed 35 x 45 mm or 43 x 55 mm photo is the safest starting point.
Do not resize a photo by stretching it. Always crop, never distort.
Dubai Visa Photo Size in Pixels
Millimetres and centimetres describe a printed photo. Pixels describe a digital file, and they are not the same thing. We could not find a single official pixel size for UAE visa photos. Many online photo tools generate files at around 300 DPI, but the safest rule is:
Follow the format and file-size limits shown on the upload form you are using.
Upload a clear JPG or JPEG file taken or scanned at a good resolution.
Never enlarge a small, low-quality image. A pixelated photo is a common reason for delays.
Dubai Visa Photo Requirements: The Complete Rules
Background and lighting
Use a plain white wall or sheet with no patterns, objects, doors or other people behind you. Light should come from the front and be even, with no harsh shadows on your face or the wall behind you.
Face, eyes and expression
Look straight into the camera with your head upright, a neutral expression and your mouth closed. Both eyes must be open and clearly visible. Avoid tilting your head, raising your chin or using a wide-angle close-up that distorts your features.
Glasses
Sunglasses are not allowed. If you need glasses for medical reasons, they should not cover your eyes or create glare. The safest option is to take them off for the photo.
Hijab, turban and other head coverings
Hats and caps are not allowed. A religious head covering can be worn as long as your full face, from the chin to the forehead, is clearly visible and the covering does not cast shadows on your face.
Clothing, hair and jewelry
Wear simple clothes that contrast with the white background, so avoid a plain white top. Keep hair away from your eyes and face. Skip anything that hides your features or reflects light.
Filters and editing
Do not use beauty filters, skin smoothing, background-blur effects or AI enhancement. A photo that looks too perfect may be flagged because it no longer matches your real appearance.
Dubai Visa Photo Requirements for Indian Applicants
Indian travelers often ask whether their passport photo will do. Not automatically. Check these points before reusing it:
Size and framing: an Indian passport photo is usually a different size from the one UAE applications expect, and the face may be too small or too large.
Background: it must be plain white.
Age: it should be recent, generally within 6 months.
Quality: a scan or photograph of a printed photo often has glare, creases or shadows. Use a fresh digital file instead.
Also remember that your passport bio-page scan and your personal photograph are two separate uploads. The photo is not cropped from the passport scan.
When you visit a studio in India, tell them clearly that the photo is for a UAE visa, ask for a white background and request a soft copy (JPG) along with the prints.

How UAE Visa Photo Sizes Compare with Other Countries
Country / region | Typical photo size |
|---|---|
UAE | 35-40 mm wide (ICP guidance); 43 x 55 mm is the common print size |
UK and Schengen countries | 35 x 45 mm |
United States | 2 x 2 inches (51 x 51 mm) |
If you already have a photo from another visa application, do not assume it will work. Differences in framing, background color and face size are enough to cause problems.
How to Take a Dubai Visa Photo at Home
Find a plain white wall or hang a white sheet. Make sure it is flat, with no folds or shadows.
Face a window in daylight, or use two lamps in front of you at equal distance. This avoids shadows on one side of your face.
Ask someone else to take the photo. Selfies distort your face and are not recommended.
Hold the camera at eye level from about one to one and a half meters away, then crop afterward.
Look straight ahead with a neutral expression and take several shots.
Check the best one: sharp, even lighting, no shadows, face filling about 70% to 80% of the frame.
Acceptable vs Rejected Dubai Visa Photos
Usually accepted | Often rejected |
|---|---|
Plain white background | Colored, patterned or cluttered background |
Face fills about 70-80% of the photo | Face too small, or head and chin cropped |
Even lighting | Shadows on the face or wall |
Neutral expression, eyes open | Wide smile, closed eyes or head tilted |
Clear digital file | Blurry, pixelated or photo of a printed photo |
Natural look | Beauty filters or heavy editing |
No glasses, or medical glasses without glare | Sunglasses, hats, or glare covering the eyes |
Photo Requirements for Children and Babies
Every traveler, including children and infants, needs an individual photo. A family photo or a parent's photo cannot be used. For babies, lay the child on a plain white sheet and take the photo from above, making sure no hands or toys appear in the frame and the face is clearly visible.
Do All Dubai Visa Types Need a Photo?
A personal photograph is part of the standard document set for UAE tourist and transit visa applications, whether you apply for a 30-day, 60-day or 90-day visa, or a 48-hour or 96-hour transit visa. The size and quality rules are the same. For the full document checklist, see our guide to Dubai tourist visa requirements.
